• Tintoretto. Master of Venetian painting

    Jacopo Robusti was born in 1519, the son of a wool dyer; it is from his father's profession that he derived his nickname Tintoretto. He had a bumpy start. Carlo Ridolfi, his 17th-century biographer, describes how the boy was apprenticed to Titian for mere days before the older artist expelled him from his studio in a fit of jealousy. Undaunted, Tintoretto taught himself by copying the finest artists of the day.
