    Images from European and Mexican books were often the source for early colonial painting in Mexico and other parts of the Americas.
    These examples, from different Mexican books, date from between 1688 to 1746. The images would have informed and influenced regional artists who were tasked to create art for local churches and other religious settings. At times artists would simply copy what they saw on the page adding color and enlarging the composition. But for many painters, renderings from a book were just a starting point, something to be enhanced, embellished and personalized.
