May Edward Chinn became the first African American woman to graduate from Bellevue Hospital Medical College in 1926. Born in Barrington, Massachusetts in 1896, Chinn moved to New York at a young age. She originally majored in music at Columbia University Teacher's College until a professor encouraged her to major in science instead.
